Painting Competition - 15th September 24
HISTORIC ARCHIVE - EVENT ENDED
9 am onwards – Arrive at EX2 4AN Customs house, having pre-booked your ticket, with your blank surface. Your canvas, paper or board is stamped on the back. Then with your materials ready and your name on the back of your piece you’re ready to choose a painting location – areas listed on our Quayside Souvenir map.
Go and spend the day creating your artwork around the quayside. Come back to Customs house / transit shed area by 3:15 – 3.30pm for judging exhibited together from the day.
There will be a 30 minute window for visitors/public to view the work created from the day – exhibited together.
Awards at 4.30pm, winners will be announced by 5pm.
Quayside artists Competition Information
15 September 2024, 9am – 4:30 pm
Open to traditional 2D artists media and styles for example oil painting and watercolour, (not digital) the terms in order to get your work judged by our expert panel is that your entry is started and completed on the quayside during the day, within the time specified, and is made in direct response to the surrounding area.
Participants will be over 18’s who have bought a ticket for the event, entrance into the competition is included in your ticket. Early bird ticket cost is £15.00 plus fees.
You will have the opportunity to have your artwork judged for the main prizes by Julie Dunster, Richard Thorn and Karen Gimlinge .
Tickets
Tickets are currently set at the early bird rate of £15 per participant plus booking fee. This can be found directly through our ticket page on Eventbrite. Early bird tickets are available now until further notice. 2024 EVENT HAS ENDED –
If you’re able to arrive with a print out of your booking confirmation that would help us out a great deal on the registration area, alternatively you can have it on your phone.

Judges For The Event
Julie Dunster is an award winning Plein Air painter – she specialises in Oil painting and her artwork has been exhibited at Mall galleries (NEAC, ROi, RSMA, SWA), Richard Thorn is a Watercolour painter, member of (Swac) and Royal Institute of Watercolour artists at Mall Galleries, Karen Gimlinge is a contemporary artist and Curator of Vandlys Galleri Exeter.

If you need to have closer access to unload please be considerate and move vehicles away as soon as possible. Alternative option to the above parking is Piazza Terracina side of the Quayside at Haven Banks 1.2 &3 (3 is much cheaper option for the entire day.
FAQs
What should I bring along to the competition / event?
All materials ready to paint for the day – you need to bring a blank canvas, surface including an easel and a chair if you wish. No materials are supplied. Plain background cover only, no preparatory drawings or painting prior to the day.

Toilets?
There are public toilets within a 100yds and plenty of cafes etc.
Weather?
The event will take place in all weather. Indeed a stormy sky can make a fabulous painting. Please bring appropriate clothing for each eventuality.
